Why Harry Potter Works and the Magisterium are Jerks – Trope or Nope

In the latest Trope or Nope, I’m talking about why the Holly Black and Cassandra Clare penned knock off The Iron Trials doesn’t work when on paper it seems to follow the recipe for Harry Potter exactly. And I mean EXACTLY. With the exception of a plot twist that comes too late in the game, it is the same story as Harry Potter, so what makes it fail?

  • I can definitely agree with you on the fact that the first book takes WAY too much inspiration from Harry Potter, and they definitely have a very similar trope. However, the following books go in a completely different direction and are actually relatively unique. On a much different note, I'm tired of the narrative of "Every book that has a magic school in it is a knock off of harry potter", not saying that you're spelling that narrative out with this video, but it's a very common one I've heard before.

  • I agree with you. The biggest flaw with the first book (and mainly the first book) is that it tries to hard to earn the attention of those who like Harry Potter. However, I wanna add (and sorry, if I sound like some white knight for this book. I literally just read the whole series in a week so it’s fresh in my mind) that Call was never dubbed a chosen one. Aaron was. Call didn’t even beat the odds as you said, Call isn’t even call. He’s the big bad. (However, I can see why you said that. Seeing as Call doesn’t remember his past life, it’s basically as though he survive.) Outside of that, I totally agree with your review. Although the writing style doesn’t improve in the later books, it certainly branches off of the whole Harry Potter premise. I can’t say the ending was THAT good, but I can’t say it was all bad.

  • I Think its dangerous to review a book you haven 't read in 6 years. Also names like "the enemy of death" must have been used before Harry Potter.

  • you dont even remember the book and you are judging it
    i smell dunning kruger effect

    1. dude from cover in nothink like death eater

    2. only mother dead

    3. he didnt cheat death in sesnse of surviving somethink as a child (everybody thinks main villain is alive and doing bad stuff and in fact main villain taken over body of calum hunt and in proces forgot everythink) so hero is literaly main villain

  • There were some similarities to Harry Potter, and you opinion on it makes sense, but you probably could have at least skimmed the book lol. You got a lot of things wrong from your memory, for example it wasn't told through the "harry potter" character, it was the "ron" like you wanted or like how there weren't death eaters like you mentioned. Anyway although you might have been biased I love your passion towards this. I also love the series but whatever lol

  • Ok so now I need a book written from the perspective of someone who is an elite in a military academy 😁. I read books 1 and 2 in the Magisterium series and liked book 2 less than book 1.. I thought it was really odd how at the time people on BookTube (in 2014) were talking a lot about book 1 before it came out, hyping it up, and then when it came out and then further books.. hardly anyone talked about them, a few people did, but a lot of the more popular bigger BookTubers just never mentioned it much anymore, like they didn't want to say on camera what they thought or something?? I know Cassadra Clare and Holly Black's books are popular (not the Magisterium books but their separately written books), there are so many Shadowhunters books, I kind of feel like they're becoming cash-ins for Cassandra Clare. I have read the first 3 books in The Mortal Instruments series and while I liked them at the time, I haven't felt like continuing (despite owning some more of her books). So many people are talking about Holly Black's series that starts with The Cruel Prince.. I'm like.. no thank you, I'm done lol. I have no interest in it.

  • no, no, this can't be anything like Harry Potter! Harry has glasses! None of these people on the cover have glasses. Highly original! lol

  • School of Good and Evil is obviously in the "magical school" trope but other than that, is nothing like Harry Potter. (I liked it a lot but it has issues and is not everyone's cup of tea.)

  • A story can have a golden trio three friends two boys one girl and not be a rip off of Harry Potter. This seems like it is a complete rip off.

  • magical military school would be a unique twist i agree certainly more create (and would require more deep thought) than blatantly ripping off HP then adding a twist at the end

  • so tropes discussed in this video include: big bad, magical school, magical trials, chosen one (kinda subverted) what else?

  • I've only attempted one Holly Black book and I DNFd it. I read the first few Cassandra Clare books when I first started BookTube and eh, they were okay. But y'know, doubt I'll read any more. I remember one of Cassie Clare's books where the same character fell through two windows and a ceiling light in a single book.
