Space Race KSP – Sputnik 1 – Making History

So it’s the end of my two week video making marathon and somehow I’ve made it all the way to Sputnik 1 which is perfect as this truly marks the start of the space race and with the style of video settling down I should be able to add videos to this series at a reasonable pace even if I do need to go back to work on Sunday 🙂

A fun little feature I’ve tried to keep secret is the stock launch platform I’ve added. It’s basically just a simplified version of the supporting booms part of the R-7 Pad. I would have added the other bits but the part count was already getting silly.

“Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957.”

  • What are you using for the breakaway on your rockets? I noticed the bottom breaks off and then on the top of the rockets you have a little propellant. I was just curious what you used for that tip part.

  • I say that you should end this series at the Apollo Soyuz Test Project (the unofficial end of the space race) so you could make interesting video about missions after the Apollo Moon landings.

  • And that was the moment in which the bad things gave birth to something greater and good. Stupid Cold War, had unwillingly created the first space rocket, giving start to space exploration.
    Great Soviet Union!💪
And you great as well. Those holding arms were unbelievable! 🤩
    Amazing series.

  • For those of us who play KSP we are all very familiar with the gravity turn to get into orbit. The ground engineers for this launch had only ever seen ballistic missile launches, which went straight up. On seeing the rocket begin to pitch over they ran in a panic as they thought it had malfunctioned, the scientist behind sputnik laughing at them all the while.

Something I heard from a documentary on the space race
